My name’s Nana Akua Amoafoa Mensah, and I’m a humble Presbyterian girl from Accra, Ghana. I’m a fashion lover and *ahem* blogger who finally made a proper blog!
This is something I have wanted to do for years now but couldn’t up the courage to. So I first had a regular WordPress then I made a tumblr I kept tweaking and adjusting and then finally said sod it and did it.
Why, what does this incredibly catchy name mean? It was the suggestion of my friend Adam who runs this really cool blog you should check out about two or three years ago. Expat because I was born and bred in Ghana but now live in the U.S. for school; mannequin because j’adore Dior. (Lol I just really wanted to use that phrase)
So, welcome to The Expat Mannequin. This blog is a pretty big step in my journey to contentment in my own skin. It’s been an uphill battle on one steep slope to get comfortable enough with myself, physically among other things, to be able to accept and share my love for fashion, beauty and nerdiness.
Most of the fashion and beauty items I own have helped me to become more comfortable with a certain part of who I am, from my dark skin tone which I got made fun of for when I was younger, to my not quite bootylicious physique, to my inexplicable attraction to weird. I hope that as you read this blog some things will help you learn to love yourself like you deserve.
The blog will also help document my experiences as a Ghanaian student in America, and how I navigate everything that’s new. Also, how I manage being a fashion lover on a Ghanaian economy inspired budget- that is a budget.
I do hope you enjoy my bit of cyberspace, and find discussions you would want to engage in- from whether Revlon’s Cherries In the Snow lipstick actually counts as a true red or raspberry to the cultural significance of Chimamanda’s We Should All Be Feminists.
To help you navigate this, On The Rug posts are on beauty items and discussing books/articles; What I Wear is for outfit diaries and closet confidential posts, and TGIF is just whatever it happens to be that week- a concert, a new album, a food place, fashion finds..
*I will do my very best to be as consistent as possible*
Peace, love and funk,
